Frequently Asked Questions

What is copyto.me?

copyto.me is a convenient clipboard sharing service that allows you to copy text from one device and paste it on another instantly.

How does it work?

Simply paste your content on one device, and it will be immediately available to retrieve via a simple mnemonic (e.g. cake) on your other devices. For a more detailed explanation, check out our features page.

Is my data secure?

Yes, your content is encrypted and securely stored. In the interest of convenience, public pastes are available to retrieve by anyone. We take privacy and security seriously. For more information, please see our Privacy Policy.

Do I need a subscription?

While we offer a free tier for occasional use, our premium subscription allows nearly unlimited use of the service. Check out our Pricing page for details.

What is your tech stack?

Our application is built with a simple three-tier stack. The frontend uses TypeScript, Next.js, React, and Tailwind CSS with AuthKit by WorkOS for authentication. The backend is Rust with the Axum web framework, JWT authentication, and sqlx for database queries. All data is stored in PostgreSQL. The entire application runs containerized using Docker in development and using Kubernetes in production.

How are the mnemonics generated?

Our mnemonics are generated from a curated list of common English words derived from Project Gutenberg's most frequently used words. We filter this list to include only alphabetic words at least 3 characters long, removing any potentially confusing terms. The system creates both single-word mnemonics and two-word combinations, then sorts them by length and frequency ranking to ensure they're easy to remember and type. This approach gives us hundreds of thousands of unique, user-friendly mnemonics while maintaining simplicity and memorability. If you encounter anything dodgy, please reach out to us.

What is the vision for copyto.me?

We want to be the most ergonomic possible tool for copying things to yourself.

Why is copyto.me not open source?

We want to raise the bar to entry for copying the website.

Why not email yourself or send a WhatsApp message to yourself?

You don't need to log in on either device. It some cases that is a useful convenience. For example, copying from your own personal device to a friend's PC that you are in control of.

Why not use Pastebin?

Pastebin is a great service but it doesn't offer really short mnemonics to easily retrieve your content. Also, copyto.me can preserve your formatting.

Is this a rip-off of magic-wormhole / webwormhole.io / wormhole.app / instant.io?

This tool is optimized for convenience, so certain tradeoffs are made at the cost of privacy.

Example advantages vs wormholes:

  • 1. The mnemonics are shorter.
  • 2. Both devices do not be connected to the tool at the same time.
  • 3. Rich text is preserved.

Disadvantages:

  • 1. The mnemonics are guessable.
  • 2. File transfers aren't supported (yet?)
